Overview
Introduced in 2018, the Audi A5 Sportback is a sleek, four-door hatchback variant of the long-running A5 line, which was initially offered as a coupe and convertible.
What’s New/Key Changes From Last Year
New for 2021 is a mild-hybrid drivetrain that uses a 12-volt electric motor to provide a modest boost in performance.
New among the A5 Sportback’s standard features are an auto-dimming rearview mirror with compass and toll transponder, wireless Apple CarPlay connectivity, and lane departure warning. Top-trim Technik models also gain rear-seat USB charge ports.
Available Trims
Audi offers the A5 Sportback in Komfort, Progressiv and Technik trim levels. All three use the 12-volt mild hybrid drive system, which is built around a 2.0L turbocharged four-cylinder engine, a seven-speed automatic dual-clutch transmission, and Quattro AWD.
Standard Features
A5 Sportback Komfort trim’s exterior features include 19-inch wheels, heated side mirrors, all-weather lights, auto on/off LED matrix headlights and LED taillights, a power tailgate, and high-gloss window trim.
Inside, Komfort models are equipped with a 10.1-inch touchscreen, panoramic sunroof, Bluetooth, a three-way split-folding rear seat, colour driver info display, a 10-speaker stereo, heated/power front seats with lumbar, three-zone automatic climate control, push-button engine start, leather-trimmed steering wheel, satellite radio, leather upholstery, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, and wireless Apple CarPlay.
Audi’s standard advanced safety package comprises city-speed collision detection with automatic braking, rear-end collision detection, rain-sensing wipers, blind spot monitoring, lane departure warning, tire pressure monitoring, and an exit warning system.
Mid-range Progressiv trim adds a virtual cockpit digital gauge cluster, navigation, an integrated garage door remote, rear cross traffic alert, a heated steering wheel, passive keyless entry, hands-free trunk operation, front and rear parking sensors, driver’s seat memory, auto-dimming side mirrors, lighted door sills, aluminum inlays, and automatic high beams.
Finally, Technik trim brings laser LED headlights, top-view camera, a Bang & Olufsen stereo, headlight washers, power-folding side mirrors, rear-seat USB charge points, ambient interior lighting, and premium LED taillights.
Key Options
Komfort trim can be augmented with a convenience package of parking sensors, heated steering wheel, driver’s seat memory, passive keyless entry, auto-dimming side mirrors, and rear cross traffic alert.
All further A5 Sportback option packs are limited to Progressiv and Technik trims.
An S line sport package brings a sport suspension and front sport seats, power front-seat lumbar, a black headliner, stainless steel pedals, and brushed aluminum interior trim. You can also add ventilated front seats to this package.
An S line black package is similar but adds gloss black interior trim and black window, grille and side mirror treatments, along with specific wheels.
A comfort seating bundle brings ventilated front sport seats with front-passenger power lumbar.
Finally, Audi’s advanced driver assistance package adds adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go, traffic congestion assist, all-speed forward collision avoidance, active lane assist, traffic sign recognition, and hands-on detection.
Fuel Economy
As of this writing, Audi had not published fuel consumption figures for the 2021 A5 Sportback and its new mild hybrid engine. However, we anticipate its estimates will be similar to those for the 2020 model, which were 10.0/7.3 L/100 km (city/highway). We’ll update this article when Audi releases its 2021 fuel economy information.
Competition
Audi’s main competitor here is the BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe, a similarly conceived compact four-door hatchback. There’s also the Volkswagen Arteon, with its larger liftback body. Finally, if you want more performance for less money in a sporty liftback, there’s the Kia Stinger.
